TECHNOTE: Rescan TVs Now

Please check this page daily for updates. | About thisproject

UPDATE THU. 5/31/18, 11:00pm: On Friday, WKAR TV and FM will be off the air for portions of the day during testing of the TV main antenna and transmission line. If testing is successful, TV and FM could be returning to the air at full power by the end of the day. If you've been unable to receive WKAR TV this week, please try a scan for channels Friday evening. Follow here for updates.

UPDATE WED. 5/30/18, 4:15pm: WKAR TV continues on the air at the new frequency, reaching our  reduced coverage area. FM stations are on the air at full power. This is likely to be the status through Thursday as well. See the previous update for more details.

UPDATE WED. 5/30/18, 12:15pm: WKAR TV continues on the air at the new frequency, though still available only in our temporary reduced coverage area. FM stations are on the air at full power. No interruptions of service are expected today.

If you have not yet done so, RESCAN YOUR TV TUNER to watch WKAR-TV at its new frequency.

If you receive WKAR after rescanning now, you should not need to rescan again until other local stations make their frequency moves.

If you DO NOT receive WKAR after a rescan now, you might be outside our current reduced coverage area while TV continues to operate at reduced power.

Size and location of your antenna affect your reception. An outside antenna at a height of 30 feet should  have reception at 30 miles from the tower. An small indoor antenna 10-15 miles away could have trouble receiving WKAR while on reduced power.

When the new main antenna is cleared for operation, reception will return for the full WKAR TV coverage area.

Unfortunately, that time could still be still be several days away. Work is underway now to remove moisture from inside the new transmission line. That work includes pressurizing, de-pressurizing and re-pressurizing the line in a process that spans several days.

When the moisture issue is resolved and the transmission line approved for use, full service across the WKAR TV normal coverage area will return. We'll post a note here when that time comes.

UPDATE TUE. 5/29/18, 4:15pm: WKAR TV is back on the air for the remainder of the day and this evening, now at the new frequency, though still at reduced power. You must RESCAN YOUR TV TUNER NOW to watch WKAR-TV at its new frequency.

If you receive WKAR after rescanning now, you should not need to rescan again. If you do not receive WKAR after a rescan this evening, you might be outside our temporary reduced coverage area.

Viewers more than 30 to 40 miles from our tower in Okemos (see map above) may not have reception yet while TV continues to operate at reduced power. When the new main antenna is cleared for operation, expected later this week, reception will return for the full WKAR TV coverage area. We'll post a note here when that time comes.

UPDATE TUE. 5/29/18, 1:15pm: WKAR TV continues off the air into the afternoon while the crew works near the emergency antenna. When TV broadcasting resumes for the day, please rescan your TV tuner to find WKAR-TV at its new frequency.

UPDATE TUE. 5/29/18, 7:15am: WKAR TV is off the air for part of Tuesday morning while the crew works near the emergency antenna. When TV broadcasting resumes for the day, please rescan your TV tuner to find WKAR-TV at its new frequency.

TV - Rescan for channels beginning Tuesday, May 29.

On Tuesday, May 29, TV begins broadcasting at new frequency 33 and frequency 40 broadcasting ends.

Antenna TV viewers must rescan for channels to continue watching WKAR after that time. After a rescan, WKAR will display as channel 23 in the channel line-up.

Viewers more than 30 to 40 miles from our tower in Okemos may still not have reception at this time, as TV continues broadcasting via emergency antenna to a reduced coverage area (see map below). When the new main antenna is cleared for operation, expected later this week, reception will return for the full WKAR TV coverage area, after a rescan for channels.

90.5 and 105.1 FM have returned to full power across their normal coverage areas. There will still be some brief periods on and after May 29 when the FM stations may be off the air or at reduced power during final work at the broadcast tower.

Service will return for some pay-tv customers on May 29; and for the remaining pay-tv customers when main antenna broadcasting resumes at that date and time to be announced

Please follow this post for updates.
