Holt community rallies around wrestling coach

Holt, MI - In his 37 years of coaching Holt wrestling, Rocky Shaft created a tight, family-like atmosphere out of a demanding and intense sport. He has given more to the wrestling program than anyone would have expected in his 53 total years with the team as a wrestler, assistant coach and now coach.

So when the mid-Michigan community learned that his Type 2 diabetes was seriously jeopardizing  his health, they rallied together to raise money for a service dog that could save his life.

Michigan State won national championships in both football and hockey in 1966. The following year, an upstart bunch of wrestlers won MSU’s only title in that sport. We talk about that magical season with Dale Anderson, author of “A Spartan Journey: Michigan State’s 1967 Miracle on the Mat.”


Hall of Fame Night for MSU and Okemos

On Thursday night both the MSU Athletics Hall of Fame and Okemos High School Hall of Fame ceremonies took place. In total, 19 individuals got the chance to see their names enshrined into sports lore. Names like Don Behm, Trevor Harris, Travis Bader, and even the late Mike Sadler are mentioned throughout this report.

EAST LANSING – The only focus for East Lansing senior wrestler Brian Darios is to win a state championship. In 2014, he set the school record for most pins in a season (32) and was a state runner-up. Numerous injuries have kept him off the mat this year, but his determination hasn’t wavered.

Before the International Ring of Grapplers (IROG) was founded in Lansing two years ago, the best chance of seeing moves like a piledriver and a Double Chickenwing, and the high-flying wrestlers who perform them, was likely on TV.
