“Get Swabbed” – It’s that simple to participate in the Communication Arts & Sciences (CAS) Bone Marrow Registry Drive next week. The event will take place on Thursday, March 28, 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. in CAS Room 191.

'Midwife' Fans Enjoy Sneak Peek!

Fans of the popular British drama Call the Midwife enjoyed a special sneak preview when they attended An Evening with WKAR at Studio C! on March 21.

It may have been very cold outside but hearts were warmed within as guests saw the first episode of the new season, which premieres on March 31 at 8 p.m. on WKAR.

Literacy Coalition Event Draws Fans

Combine Curious George, Clifford, storytelling, a stage show and lots of opportunities to pick up information about childhood literacy. These ingredients made the Early Childhood Literacy Event a hit with mid-Michigan families. The event was held Sunday, March 17, at East Lansing's Hannah Community Center.

WKAR was on hand for the well-attended event. Beany Tomber, WKAR's education services coordinator said "People loved the performances, the storytellers, the characters and all the activities. They thought it was an awesome event for families!"

WKAR was honored with seven awards from the Michigan Association of Broadcasters (MAB), including the coveted “Michigan Public Television Station of the Year” award at the annual MAB Awards of Excellence ceremony held on Wednesday, March 13 in Lansing, Michigan.

An enthusiastic group bundled up on a cold winter's evening to enjoy an Evening at WKAR featuring a screening of the upcoming WKAR documentary Makers: Women Who Make America, with a follow-up discussion with Two Men and a Truck International founder, Mary Ellen Sheets.

The Documentary

WKAR’s Ready To Learn Service will host a Raising Readers Family Fun Workshop on Wednesday, February 27, at Reo Elementary School in Lansing.

The evening presents lively and interactive new ways to build reading skills while having fun with your child. Workshops are targeted to families and children 4-6 years, but siblings are welcome to attend with their families.

The evening includes a light supper. Families will receive learning activities they can do at home and each child will receive a free book.

'Powerbroker' Inspires Audience

On February 13, WKAR welcomed guests to a Community Cinema screening and discussion based around the Independent Lens film Powerbroker: Whitney Young’s Fight for Civil Rights. The film provides an inside look on the voices behind the scenes of the civil rights movement.

Powerbroker will air on WKAR-TV on Monday, February 18, at 10 p.m. as part of the Independent Lens series.
