MSU athlete shares faith and sports in South Africa

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State lacrosse player Helen Young never thought her life would be transformed by merging her sport with her faith. A recent trip to South Africa, through Athletes in Action, has opened Young's heart and mind to the power of sports and how she can practice her beliefs. Current Sports beat reporter Laurel Young chats with Helen to discuss the life-changing experience and how it continues to live with her back here on campus.

Roller hockey passes on love of the game

EAST LANSING, Mich. – It’s a truth many athletes know: the only way to advance their sport is for younger generations learn it, love it, and then carry it on.

Michigan State’s roller hockey teams pay the love of their sport forward, by annually participate in Mission’s “Hockey College” for younger players.

Since 2007, Mission has held their Hockey College program, at college roller hockey tournaments around the country. The college players help run clinics for young players.

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Demonstration Hall on Michigan State’s campus is used for a lot of activities. During the day, you may see indoor soccer classes playing on the plastic floor surrounded by hockey-style boards, or the color guard practicing their flag spinning.

If you stop by at 10 p.m. though, you’ll see 12 men on rollerblades, five without shirts on, two in goalie masks, with hockey sticks in-hand, passing a plastic puck.
