When City Commissioner Rosalynn Bliss succeeds longtime Grand Rapids mayor George Heartwell in January, she’ll do so as the first female mayor in the city’s history. Current State talks to Bliss about her historic election and the most pressing issues facing Grand Rapids. 

The city of Grand Rapids will see new leadership in 2016, and the moment will be historic.  Three weeks ago, Second Ward Commissioner Rosalynn Bliss was elected the city’s next mayor.  She’ll take office on January 1st.

Harry Wyckom was a turn of the 20th century Grand Rapids insurance salesman...and model. Wyckom posed as the character “Mr. Rover”, a traveling dandy who was pictured in scenes all around Grand Rapids and Western Michigan in front of notable buildings and scenic areas.

After World War II, Michigan was a hub for architects who broke away from the neo-classical shapes inspired by ancient Greece and Rome. The era of modern architecture lasted about 30 years and produced many structures still seen today.
