Today on Current State: federal Balanced Budget Amendment; sleep cleaning; making a movie in Michigan; and MSU's "Happy Birthday Mozart" concert.


In his recent State of the State address, Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder called on the state legislature to join 20 other states already prodding the federal government to enact a constitutional amendment requiring a balanced federal budget.

New study: Sleep may activate brain's 'cleaning crew'

Why do we sleep? Some new research indicates that sleep may actually be what enables the brain’s cleaning crew to keep things chemically tidy in there. A Danish study, published this fall in the journal Science, has implications both for our daily mental well-being and possibly for longer-term concerns like dementia and Alzheimer’s.

Moviemaking in Michigan: Getting Started

Making a movie is a complicated business. There has to be a script, a producer, a director, actors, costumes, sets, props, and a seemingly endless list of jobs to be done. If you’ve ever watched a movie through the end of the credits, you know what I mean. Today, Current State launches an ambitious project to follow the process of making a movie in Michigan from start to finish.
