UPDATE: Snowstorm brings power outages but no reported injuries

By Kevin Lavery, WKAR News

East Lansing, MI –

UPDATE:
Consumers Energy spokesman Tim Pietryga says there are about 600 customers still without electrical service in Ingham county. He says outtages Wednesday evening are concentrated in Holt and Okemos. Crews continue to restore power, but some may have to wait until 4 p.m. Thursday.

Last night's heavy snowstorm knocked out power to thousands of people across southern Michigan. The Lansing Board of Water and Light says about 3,500 customers lost electricity overnight. As of 5 p.m. Wednesday, that number was down to around 100. BWL spokesman Mark Nixon says he expects most restorations to be performed Wednesday evening.

Consumers Energy is also dealing with widespread outages. At 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, spokesman Tim Pietryga said the largest problem spots were in the Lansing metro area.

"Ingham County currently has about 3,093 customers without service, and moving down to Jackson, they have about 879 customers as well," says Pietryga. "So, hardest hit, and obviously our crews will be responding today."

Pietryga says there are also reports of downed power lines in many counties, from Battle Creek to Saginaw. He says most Consumers Energy customers should have their electricity restored by midnight.

Some people in the Lansing and Battle Creek areas may not get their power turned on until Thursday afternoon.
