Lansing, MI – Two Lansing community organizations are unveiling plans to honor legendary farm workers' advocate Cesar Chavez in the city's Old Town district.

AUDIO:

The Old Town Commercial Association and the group Lansing for Cesar Chavez want to create two memorials to the late activist. One is to name part of Grand River Avenue after Chavez. This co-designation would include two sets of street signs.

The other is to build a privately-funded plaza at the corner of Grand River and Turner.

"When Old Town wasn't the vibrant community that it is now, that was the heart of the community where people came together and celebrated the potential of what it could be," says Old Town Commercial Association executive director Brittney Hoszkiw. "So we're really excited to see an honorable area be named after an honorable person."

In 1994, the Lansing City Council renamed a section of Grand Avenue after Chavez, but voters overturned it. This latest attempt must also pass the council's scrutiny, but organizers feel their chances of success are better now.
