A Simon & Hollis Conversation with MSU Men's Tennis Coach Gene Orlando

Lou Anna K. Simon, Gene Orlando, Mark Hollis

MSU men’s tennis coach Gene Orlando is bullish on the future of his sport.

“The evolution of the equipment and the pace of the game are stronger, and the players are more athletic.  The game keeps getting better and stronger,” Orlando tells Michigan State University President Lou Anna K. Simon and Spartans Athletic Director Mark Hollis on MSU Today.

Tennis, like golf, is a sport that can be played for a lifetime.  “Once you fall in love, it’s almost like a disease.  You just want to keep playing.”

Orlando says he’s concerned about the rise in popularity of pickle ball and its potential negative impact on tennis.  He sees them as different sports.

He says one of the most rewarding parts of his job is recruiting young people, developing relationships with them, and watching them grow.

“Michigan State allows us the opportunities.  And the facilities and staff we have – from athletic and strength trainers to academic advisers – are the full package.”

MSU Today airs Sunday afternoons at 4:00 on AM 870.
