Ingham County Prosecutor Carol Siemon’s office sent out a statement Monday reviewing the March 31st incident where officers of the Lansing Police Department fired shots that wounded Michael Magik Jones. WKAR’s Katie Cook has more.

Ingham County Prosecutor Carol Siemon statement says it is her office’s assertion that the use of force by the LPD in the incident with Jones was consistent with state law, and that no crime was committed by any officer during this incident.

Siemon also states it is their belief that the use of force was consistent with established and appropriate police policies, tactics, and training. These statements come after an independent investigation into the incident by Michigan State Police.

On the date in question, officers responded to a report of shots fired and were warned of a possible armed suspect. As they approached someone who fit the given description, one officer drew their pistol and made a command for that person to stop. It is alleged that the suspect opened fire on the officers and then fled the scene.

After a MSP helicopter search located the suspect, it is alleged that further shots were fired at the officers. Two of the LPD officers discharged their weapons, and the suspect was struck by police gunfire.

Jones is currently facing allegations of criminal conduct and has a case that is pending in Lansing’s 54-A District Court.

The prosecutor’s office says any alleged criminal conduct is only an allegation, as Jones has the right to a trial and is considered innocent until proven guilty.
