The new state Senate leader says repealing Michigan’s prevailing wage law will be a priority this year.

The prevailing wage law requires union-level wages and benefits for people working on state-funded construction projects. Democrats have blasted plans to repeal it because they say it guarantees workers a decent wage.
Republican state Senate Majority leader Arlan Meekhof says he doesn’t see why it has to be a divisive issue.
“I don’t know what’s divisive about saving money for local governments and schools,” he says. “I think that’s where we need to concentrate.”
Governor Rick Snyder’s office says he has “no intention” of supporting legislation to repeal the prevailing wage.
