The Jackson County Animal Shelter is back in business after closing earlier this week because of a contagious canine illness.
The shelter closed last Monday after a dog was found to have contracted canine parvovirus.
The disease is widely transmittable among dogs but does not spread to humans.
The staff thoroughly sanitized the facility and vaccinated the exposed animals.
Medical director Dr. Cathy Anderson says all the dogs except two have since shown strong antibody immunity.
“It appears that we have the situation under control,” says Anderson. “We’re really pleased with our response; we’re really pleased also with the public’s support.”
Anderson says the other two dogs are also expected to develop full immunity. The shelter is open to the public for cat and dog adoptions.
