While Congress continues to argue over funding for Planned Parenthood, the debate about abortion rights is also playing out here in Michigan. We speak with President and CEO of Planned Parenthood of Mid and South Michigan Lori Carpentier, and Genevieve Marnon, public affairs associate with Right to Life Michigan, to hear both sides of the issue.
Planned Parenthood is a health care provider that delivers reproductive health care, sex education, and information to women, men, and young people worldwide. The nonprofit has been in the spotlight since undercover videos that were released by an anti-abortion group accuse them of selling fetal tissue for profit. Planned Parenthood denies those allegations and says the videos were heavily edited.
President Cecile Richards appeared before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform just last week. The hearing marked the first face-to-face encounter between Planned Parenthood and Republicans since the videos have raised abortion and the drive to defund Planned Parenthood to a top political issue.
Current State talks with Lori Carpentier, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood Mid and South Michigan, and Genevieve Marnon, public affairs associate at Right to Life of Michigan. Right to Life is a nonprofit organization of people "united to protect human life from fertilization to natural death."
