One of the final hurdles facing a new international crossing between Detroit and Windsor has been cleared.

The U.S. government has been slow to approve funding to build a customs plaza on Michigan’s side of the bridge. Now, Canadian officials say they will pay for the plaza. They are already paying for most of the up-front costs associated with the rest of the project.
But U.S. Senator Gary Peters says Washington will pay for staff and operational costs of the plaza.
“That’s certainly one thing that I’ve focused on, to make sure that the federal government will actually staff that plaza, to make sure the resources are there,” he says.
Peters says the project is critical for Michigan’s economy – and for the entire country. Canada will be repaid through future toll revenues.
