Nassar's Eaton County Sentencing Begins

Jan 31, 2018

Larry Nassar is being sentenced in Eaton County this week for three charges of first degree criminal sexual assault. These charges are part of the universal plea agreement that includes the Ingham County charges.

Judge Janice Cunningham’s sentencing will be Nassar’s third, in addition to his 60-year federal sentence for child pornography and his 40 to 175 year sentence for first degree criminal sexual assault in Ingham County.

Just like in the Ingham County hearings, victims are allowed to give impact statements. One of the first victims to speak Wednesday morning was Annie Labrie.

“A pedophile cannot flourish in the way Larry did in an environment that is not conducive to his behavior,” she said. “While justice has been served for the sexual predator, it is imperative that we as a society does not view this as an isolated incident. He was prolific because surrounding authorities allowed him to be. Because the gymnastics world allowed him to be. Because still, women are not perceived to be credible.”

Originally about a dozen victims were expected to make statements in Eaton County, but that number is now up to 65. Sentencing hearings will not take place Thursday but will resume Friday. Judge Cunningham says sentencing will very likely happen Tuesday.
