LANSING, MI –
The annual Martin Luther King Junior holiday luncheon in Lansing will feature Maryland Congressman Elijah Cummings today.
The Democrat from Baltimore says people continue to be influenced by the example of Doctor King. He says they know that if it wasn't for him, they wouldn't have the lives they enjoy today.
"They wouldn't have the jobs that they have," Cummings says, "they wouldn't be able to go to the social places that they might want to go to, they wouldn't be able to live in the neighborhoods that they live in. And so, he has had his fingerprints on just about every aspect of life in the African-American community."
Cummings grew up listening to radio broadcasts of King sermons, and was inspired as a teenager to take part in a project to integrate a Baltimore swimming pool.
The King holiday luncheon will be held at the Lansing Center, starting at 11 a.m.
