MI GOP Convention To Be in Detroit

About 2,500 Michigan Republicans gather in Detroit this weekend for their party’s spring convention.

The state GOP will select delegates to the Republican National Convention this coming August in Tampa, Florida.

Mitt Romney has the Republican presidential nomination all but sewn up, but there’s expected to be some battling between supporters of Romney, former Senator Rick Santorum and Texas Congressman Ron Paul over the officially uncommitted slate of delegates. Half of Michigan’s delegation to the Republican National Convention will not have voting privileges because the state defied party rules by holding an early presidential primary.

Republicans hope to make Michigan a competitive state this year with native son Mitt Romney at the top of the ticket. The state has not gone with the GOP nominee since 1988.

Former Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty will make an appearance on Romney’s behalf and Ann Romney – wife of the candidate -- will deliver a video address.
