One of mid-Michigan’s largest health care systems will collaborate with Michigan State University to build a new hospital in south Lansing.
McLaren Health Care will build a 240-bed hospital at the MSU corporate research park near US-127 and Collins Road. It will feature a cancer and ambulatory care center and spaces for medical research.
McLaren will ultimately phase out its aging campuses on Pennsylvania Avenue and Greenlawn Avenue in Lansing.
McLaren Greater Lansing President and CEO Tom Mee says the project will be directed by patient input.
“The opportunity to build a hospital from the ground up is clearly and once in a lifetime opportunity, and we’ve got a very, very clear directive and mandate that we’re going to build the safest and most efficient hospital in the world,” Mee says.
Officials estimate construction will create about 2,500 jobs.
Groundbreaking is expected by next summer, with completion in 2021.
