May jobless rates jump sharply in Michigan regions

By AP

LANSING, MI – Michigan says seasonally unadjusted regional unemployment rates jumped sharply in all major labor markets except for the tourism-dependent North.

The state Department of Energy, Labor & Economic Growth said Thursday joblessness rose in 14 of the 17 markets between April and May.

Regional unemployment rates are not seasonally adjusted. The state's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate led the nation at 14.1% in May.

The region with the highest unadjusted jobless rate in May was 16.5% in the Flint area, where the April rate was 14.2%. The lowest rate was in Ann Arbor, where the rate rose from 7.8% in April to 9.1% in May.
