After all the votes have been counted in the general election, there’s still another round of elections this week. The legislature will choose its leaders for the coming session on Thursday. News services say the race for state House democratic leader is pretty well decided.

Representative Tim Greimel has been winning lots of support from his Democratic colleagues in the House. Capitol news services Gongwer and MIRS report two previous contenders for the spot dropped out this weekend and endorsed the Auburn Hills lawmaker.

Greimel is one of the most junior members of the House. He was sworn in last March to fill a vacancy.

Current House Democratic Leader Richard Hammel will not return next year due to term limits.

State House Republicans might also have to choose new leadership this week, depending on how Speaker Jase Bolger does tomorrow. His reelection prospects suffered as the result of an election-rigging scandal this summer.

Jake Neher is a reporter for the Michigan Public Radio Network. He covers the State Legislature and other political events in Lansing.
