Granholm's 'Meatout Day' angers Michigan farmers

By AP

LANSING, MI – Some Michigan agriculture organizations have a beef with Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm.

Granholm has declared Saturday "Meatout Day" in Michigan. A proclamation issued by her office encourages residents to choose not to eat meat in observance of the day and to try different recipes rich with vegetables, fruit and whole grain.

The Michigan Farm Bureau blasted the proclamation as "unconscionable and an insensitive slap in the face" to livestock farmers and meat-eating residents. The Michigan Agri-Business Association on Wednesday called for Granholm to retract the
proclamation.

Granholm plans to try and soothe hurt feelings by issuing another proclamation declaring Saturday to be an all-inclusive Agriculture Day in Michigan.
