The Democratic and Republican candidates for governor appeared separately at a forum with the Detroit Economic Club Thursday. As Michigan Public Radio's Laura Weber reports, they received different welcomes.
AUDIO:
Republican candidate Rick Snyder appeared comfortable and at-home in front of the large crowd. He talked about how he'd like to see the budget process change, and he'd like Michigan to reinvent itself and end a bureaucratic era. And he gave this anecdote
"I actually ran as a precinct delegate back in college, so I'm hoping to go two-and-oh here," he laughed. "But the reason I'm running is I think we have a broken political system."
Democratic candidate Virg Bernero agrees with Snyder that Michigan has a broken political system, but Bernero had a cooler reception from the audience. He ended his opening statement to stone silence, in part because he seemed to have stunned the crowd in calling for banks to halt foreclosures.
Both candidates say they look forward their first and only debate this weekend.
