Five Detroit schools employees charged in probe

By AP

DETROIT – Five Detroit Public Schools employees have been charged with embezzlement in an ongoing probe the prosecutor says is part of a "culture of corruption" at Michigan's largest district.

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy announced Wednesday each is charged with one or more counts of embezzlement.

The defendants are a clerical worker at an elementary school, a person who works in the district's controls office, a truck driver, a high school teacher's aide and a food service coordinator at an elementary school.

The clerical worker is accused of writing 15 checks to herself in the amount of $10,600 and making 17 withdrawals totaling $14,650.

Worthy says arrangements are being made for the five to turn themselves in for arraignment.
