Early projections show state slow recovery

By Laura Weber, Michigan Public Radio Network

LANSING, MI –
Top state economic officials agree Michigan is beginning to show signs of slow economic growth. But they also agree the state will still be in a deep financial hole in the coming fiscal year. They just don't know yet how big that hole will be.

Andy Dillon is the new state treasurer. He says he is encouraged that economists inside and outside state government agree the worst is over.

"Whether it be the outside folks or House, Senate and Treasury, we're pretty much in alignment with GDP growth of about 3 percent, so that consistency is encouraging," he says.

Governor Rick Snyder is expected to unveil his executive budget next month, and that's when the size the of the deficit will become known. Budget Director John Nixon says the budget deficit will be less than 2 billion dollars.
