Congressman Ehlers to retire

By Laura Weber, Michigan Public Radio Network

LANSING, MI –

Congressman Vern Ehlers of Grand Rapids announced Wednesday that he will retire after this year. And the list of people who could run for his seat is already getting long.

State Senator Bill Hardiman, a former mayor of Kentwood, says he will decide over the next few days whether to run for the congressional seat.

"For quite some time I've felt that this might be a good next position for me to serve," he says. "And it is all about service."

Former state Senator Ken Sikkema is rumored to be interested in the congressional seat. State Representative Justin Amash announced his plans to campaign for the job before Ehlers announced his retirement.
