LANSING, MI –
New potential candidates from northern Michigan are considering a run for Congress because of U.S. Rep. Bart Stupak's decision to retire.
The Democrat from Menominee announced Friday that he would not seek re-election this year.
Michigan House Republican Leader Kevin Elsenheimer of Kewadin says in a statement Friday he is taking a "serious look" at running for Stupak's seat and will announce his decision in the coming days. Elsenheimer can't run for the state House again because of term limits.
Three candidates are seeking the GOP nomination, along with a Democrat who is pro-choice on abortion.
