On Tuesday, the Capital Area District Library system hopes voters will approve a four-year extension of funding for its core operations. The network of 13 area libraries seeks a renewal of its 1.56 mill funding provision. District Library Director Lance Werner says the system has cut costs recently, but maintained most services.

"We have cut across the board," he says. "We've cut labor. We have a cut a little out of our materials budget. We, uh, made cuts through our union contract. We've eliminated most travel."

Werner also says the weak economy has triggered an increase in use of the libraries because it's inexpensive. The measure would amount to $78 a year for the owner of a $100,000 house. Some opponents claim home computing has made libraries obsolete.

There appears to be little or no organized opposition to the measure.
