Broad Art Museum’s newest sculpture lands on campus

A new sculpture is gracing the Michigan State University campus. It’s called “The Bird.” Current State’s Scott Pohl talks with the artist, Will Ryman, and Broad Art Museum curator Caitlin Doherty.

A bird has landed on the MSU campus. Normally, that isn’t news, but this is an exceptional bird. It’s an enormous steel sculpture of a bird that has been obtained by the Broad Art Museum.

The piece is made from nails, probably the biggest nails you’ve ever seen.

“The Bird” is not inside the museum; nor is it in the adjacent sculpture garden. It’s across East Circle Drive, in a spot where it seems to be peeking over a hedge at the museum.

"The Bird" was brought to MSU on the back of a flatbed truck.

Scott Pohl has maintained an on-call schedule reporting for WKAR following his retirement after 36 years on the air at the station.
