African history told through beads and art at Detroit museum

The Dabl’s MBAD African Bead Museum is a Detroit institution. After 16 years in operation, it’s about to go through some expansion and renovation. Current State's Katie Cook visits founder Olayami Dabls.

The Detroit narrative of strength and resilience is well-known, as is its reputation for celebrating culture, creativity and art. This picture of Detroit is embodied in one of the city’s gems: the Dabl’s MBAD African Bead Museum, which has been in operation in West Detroit for more than 16 years.

Current State’s Katie Cook went to Detroit to see the museum and talk with founder Olayami Dabls, an artist and visual storyteller. His museum has become a destination for people from all over the world.
