3rd of 8 furlough days in Genesee County is Monday

By AP

FLINT, MI – This is another long weekend for many Genesee County employees.

Non-essential county offices will be closed Monday, the third of eight unpaid days off for county employees this fiscal year.

The county Board of Commissioners included the furloughs in an effort to balance the county budget in the fiscal year ending Sept. 30. Officials have said each day off is expected to save about $200,000.

State of Michigan workers took six unpaid days off last fiscal year. Members of the United Auto Workers last month approved a contract that replaces previously announced furlough days with a banked leave program. The UAW represents 17,000 state employees.

Nonunion employees and some unionized workers in Detroit have taken unpaid furlough days this fiscal year.
