MIDLAND, MI – The scheduled Wednesday night game between the Lansing Lugnuts and the Great Lakes Loons was rained out. It will be made up as part of a doubleheader at 6:05 p. m. tonight. The rainout is Lansing's 10th of 2009, leading into the club's ninth doubleheader of the year.
OAKLAND, CA – Jason Giambi and Jack Cust broke out of funks with two-run homers, Dallas Braden ended a four-start winless stretch and the Oakland Athletics beat the Detroit Tigers 5-1 Wednesday.
Giambi's drive in the sixth off Justin Verlander (8-4) was home run No. 407, tying him with Duke Snider for 43rd place. Giambi, who has been dealing with sore legs and entered the game with an American League-low .197 batting average, was in a 2-for-28 stretch before the homer after striking out in his first two at-bats.
EAST LANSING, MI – General Motors on Wednesday said June vehicle sales in the United States fell 33% compared to year-ago numbers. But Lansing-made crossover vehicles fared better, all posting sales gains.
Sales of the Buick Enclave were up 26%. The GMC Acadia posted a 10% gain. And the Saturn Outlook climbed by 6%. All are assembled at GM's Lansing Delta Township plant.

EAST LANSING, MI – Attorney General Mike Cox is opposing Blue Cross-Blue Shield's request for a rate hike on customers who pay for their own coverage. Blue Cross is planning a temporary rate hike while it waits for permission to permanently boost its premiums.
