LANSING, MI – A third grade teacher from Okemos Public Schools is a finalist for the National Teacher of the Year award.
Rob Stephenson is one of four finalists for the award. As Michigan's Teacher of the Year, Stephenson has a seat on the state Board of Education. State schools Superintendent Michael Flanagan says the state's best teachers play an important part at board meetings.
Mason, MI – Mid-Michigan law enforcement officials are warning state government leaders that early release of prison inmates puts the safety of communities at risk. They're also concerned about proposed legislation that would dismantle Truth in Sentencing rules.
LANSING, MI – Ingham county officials are worried that recent improvements in young peoples' health may be short-lived. The newly released Kids' Count report shows ongoing declines in teen deaths and pregnancies and fewer kids being placed outside the home. But human service professionals worry that the gains--from 2007 and 2008--are in jeopardy. Marcus Cheatham is a spokesman for the Ingham County Health Department.
EAST LANSING, MI – Amo Bessone, who coached the Michigan State hockey team for 28 years and led the Spartans to the 1966 NCAA title, has died in New Mexico at the age of 93.
Bessone compiled a 367-467-20 record before retiring after the 1978-79 season. His Spartans teams won outright Big Ten titles in 1966-67, 1970-71 and 1975-76, and tied for the 1972-73 championship. He coached 12 All-Americans and three Olympians.
DETROIT – The Ford Fusion Hybrid midsize sedan wins the 2010 North American Car of the Year, while the Ford Transit Connect takes truck of the year at the Detroit auto show.
Forty-nine auto journalists made the picks. Finalists for the car award included the Buick LaCrosse and Volkswagen Golf GTI. The Chevrolet Equinox, Ford Transit Connect and Subaru Outback were finalists for the truck award.
