LANSING, MI – Lansing city councilmember-elect Tina Houghton has paid at least part of her back taxes owed to the city. The payment represents a little more than half for the $3,300 she needs to repay before taking office.
Ingham County records show that earlier this week Houghton paid her $1,700 2008 taxes. She still owes the city $1,400 for this year's summer taxes. Winter tax bills will be mailed December 1st.
The city of Lansing might start charging nightclubs for emergency services if police and fire departments are repeatedly called to quell disturbances. The city council could consider and ordinance next week that would charge nightclub owners the cost of emergency response if the city gets more than two emergency calls to the club.
East Lansing, MI – A plan to consolidate one of the more public functions of state government has some civic officials concerned. Michigan Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land is proposing to close branch offices in downtown Lansing and East Lansing. Land says consolidating those services into a single "super center" would allow for better customer service and save money.
EAST LANSING, MI – Michigan State and Notre Dame skated to a 1-1 tie on Thursday evening at Munn Ice Arena, but the Irish earned the extra point in the standings as they won the shootout in four rounds, 2-1. Derek Grant had the lone goal for the spartans, who will face the Irish again on Sunday in a mantinee effort in Fort Wayne, IN.
East Lansing, MI – EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Ashley Barlow scored 18 points and hit a tiebreaking free throw with 10 seconds left, lifting No. 5 Notre Dame to a 68-67 victory over No. 21 Michigan State on Thursday night.
The Spartans had a chance to win after Barlow's late foul shot for the Fighting Irish (2-0), but Aisha Jefferson missed a jumper with 4 seconds to go.
Allyssa DeHaan led Michigan State (1-2) with 20 points.
