'Powerbroker' Inspires Audience

On February 13, WKAR welcomed guests to a Community Cinema screening and discussion based around the Independent Lens film Powerbroker: Whitney Young’s Fight for Civil Rights. The film provides an inside look on the voices behind the scenes of the civil rights movement.

Powerbroker will air on WKAR-TV on Monday, February 18, at 10 p.m. as part of the Independent Lens series.

Sandra Clark Joins Evening at WKAR Line-up

Sandra S. Clark, director of the Michigan Historical Center, will be the featured speaker at the "Evening at WKAR" preview of Ken Burns' "The Dust Bowl." The event will take place Thursday, November 15, at WKAR.

Clark has been the director of the historical center since 1991. Her history degrees are from Michigan State University.

"As someone who grew up in Kansas, it’s [the Dust Bowl] a topic I’ve long been interested in," she said.

Guests will see a 40-minute preview of the film, followed by Clark's talk. The event is free.

Playing the first game for the Green Team are Scott Westerman, President, MSU Alumni Association; Jen Sygit, Michigan-based singer and songwriter; Sue Carter, MSU School of Journalism faculty member, author and intrepid adventurer; and team captain Guy Sanville, Artistic Director, Purple Rose Theatre.

On Thursday we recorded the only debate that U.S. Senate candidates Pete Hoekstra, Clark Durant and Randall Heckman will hold before the primary. This Off the Record Special was moderated by Tim Skubick and with the no-rules format, it made for some lively conversation.

'Peep' Visits Lansing JazzFest!

WKAR heads to Lansing JazzFest on August 3-4 in Lansing's Old Town. "Peep," the enchanting title character of the children's series Peep and the Big Wide World, will be on hand to greet the kids near the Kidz Beat tent and the MICA stage.

"Peep" will appear on Friday, August 3 between 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. On Saturday, August 4, "Peep" will appear from 2-5 p.m.

Look for our Street Team and have them take your child's photo with Peep! We'll be posting them on our WKAR Facebook page!
