This is a little less than half of our way to the total we'd like to reach by Sunday, and we're about two-thirds of the way through the campaign.

Susi's Station Notes: Shorter Pledge Campaigns!

Susi Elkins, WKAR TV station manager

You may have noticed that WKAR's fundraising campaign began on Thursday. We're trying something new this year. Instead of having our regular 16-day campaigns four times a year, we are hoping to have those events go only eleven days.

You might say, "Don't you need the money?" and the answer is "Yes! We do!" Our goal is to do a better job of reaching out to more WKAR viewers with the opportunity to become WKAR supporters -- making WKAR and public broadcasting stronger in our community.

WKAR Radio Celebrates 90 Years!

WKAR AM/870 celebrates 90 years on August 18.

Saturday, August 18, marks 90 years of broadcasting on WKAR.

Although the station's first "official" broadcast was a founder's day speech on May 13 of that year, it wasn't until August 18, 1922, that WKAR was granted a federal license.

J.B. "Jimmy" Hasselman was the station's first director, and its first transmitter was built by electrical engineering students in 111 Olds Hall. Until then it was a student radio station.

Summer Recipes from the Test Kitchen!

Bridget and Chris offer recipes on "America's Test Kitchen" and "Cook's Country."

One of the fun things about working in WKAR's communications office is that we learn about all the terrific shows on WKAR-TV and links that can really enhance the experience!

As a WKAR Create fan, I'm fond of America's Test Kitchen and Cook's Country, so I was especially excited to see links to their never-fail recipes.

Here are a few you may enjoy!

Susi's Station Notes: What a Week!

It's been another busy week for us, both in the studio and out! On Thursday we recorded the only debate that U.S. Senate candidates Pete Hoekstra, Clark Durant and Randall Heckman will hold before the primary. This Off the Record Special was moderated by Tim Skubick and with the no-rules format, it made for some lively conversation.

Susi's Station Notes: Check Out an Evening at WKAR

Susi Elkins introduces Molly Fillmore at At Evening at WKAR.

Every day I am more and more impressed with the incredible talents of people who live right here in our mid-Michigan community.

Earlier this week, WKAR welcomed Molly Fillmore as our guest for an "Evening at WKAR." Two years ago, Molly appeared on BackStage Pass with some of her colleagues from the voice faculty at MSU's College of Music. Little did we realize back then that we were working with a woman who would appear on one of the great stages of the world — the Metropolitan Opera in New York City.

Our phone has been ringing with calls from fans of WKAR Create who wonder what happened to their programs.

The Create service recently juggled the schedule around. WKAR members who receive our monthly program magazine, Stay Tuned, at home, would have seen a schedule on the back cover of this month's issue.  (Stay Tuned is sent to members of WKAR who give $40 or more to either WKAR-TV or Radio. You may donate HERE.)

Susi's Station Notes: An Anniversary

Susi Elkins out in the community recording video breaks with the WKAR crew.

On July 1, WKAR celebrated its first anniversary as part of the College of Communication Arts & Sciences at MSU.  During a staff meeting this week, Dean Pamela Whitten and Gary Reid, WKAR's general manager, congratulated the staff on an amazing year of hard work and major accomplishments.  As they gave us a snapshot of how far we’ve come in just twelve months, it struck me that each point of pride was in direct relation to how much we have opened ourselves up to our community.

WKAR student Maria Palmo, Tom Daldin (host of "Under the Radar Michigan"), WKAR producer Mike Mihalus and videographer Jason Vlahos.

"Under the Radar Michigan," the popular weekly series that visits sites throughout Michigan that are both known to all and known to few, came to Lansing. WKAR's crew met the "UTR" team in downtown Lansing, where host Tom Daldin recorded video promos and a fundraising video for WKAR.

Judging by the photos, it looks like this might have been the perfect way to spend a June day!

Watch "Under the Radar Michigan" on Sundays at 7 p.m. on WKAR-TV and Saturdays at 6:30 p.m. on WKAR World.

The New Media Landscape

When I was young I had a fascination for all things technical. “Kind is it?”  “Size is it?” “What is it?” were the queries to my parents even before grammar and syntax became important. And while my parents did their best to answer my questions, my curiosity was both quelled, and stimulated, by broadcasting.

Susi Elkins: WKAR-TV Station Manager

Susi Elkins

Like most American kids, WKAR-TV station manager Susi Elkins grew up watching Sesame Street. She remembers coming home from school and eating a peanut butter and jelly sandwich with a glass of milk while watching her favorite show. Little did she know that one day she would be working alongside the children’s characters of Sesame Street and other programs that help define public television.
