When you think of Michigan’s wine country,  you probably think of the vineyards in places like Traverse City or the Leelanau Peninsula.

But while the sandy soil along the lakeshore is where most of the state’s wine grapes are grown, there are plenty of wineries in other parts of the state.  

Burgdorf’s Winery in Haslett is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year.

When owners Deb and Dave Burgdorf started the winery 10 years ago, they were actually working out of their garage.  They’ve expanded since then.

It’s a red, white and rose tradition in our state:  the annual Michigan Wine Competition. About a thousand bottles of the state’s best vintages have come case by case to Lansing in advance of the August 11 event. Current State’s Kevin Lavery has a preview.

There’s a unique new partnership between the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and one of the state’s best-known wineries. Chateau Grand Traverse is launching three wines with labels related to Michigan’s park experience, and will be donating part of the profits to one of three projects selected by people voting online.

As the farmed cherry harvest in Michigan is finishing up, viticulturists are preparing to collect grapes in a couple of weeks. Michigan’s wine industry is in a state of steady growth.

On Tuesday, the 36th annual Michigan Wine Competition will take place at the Kellogg Center in East Lansing. Some of Michigan’s top wineries will present their best creations to a panel of wine experts from across the state and nation.
