Is it church music? Or is it an opera in disguise? This weekend, the Grand Rapids Symphony performs Verdi’s Requiem. WKAR’s Jamie Paisley sat down with the Symphony’s new music director, Marcelo Lehninger to talk about one of the maestro’s favorite pieces.

After 10 years as music director, Leonard Slatkin is in his final one with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. WKAR will be bringing you select live broadcasts throughout the year, part of a partnership with WRCJ in Detroit. But for this Friday’s 1st live broadcast of the season, WKAR’s Jamie Paisley went to Orchestra Hall to speak with the Maestro.

Michigan classical fans may have noticed that the Lansing Symphony’s season is off to a late start. That’s because this past summer’s new roof project at the Wharton Center meant pushing back a few weeks. But WKAR’s Jamie Paisley spoke with Maestro Timothy Muffitt about how the LSO used the October start to its advantage.

Usually, the Lansing Symphony Orchestra season begins in September, but for the season premiere concert, Maestro Timothy Muffitt tells me that the recently announced 2017-18 season has to be pushed back thanks to a bit of construction at the Wharton Center.

During Black History Month, WKAR will be exploring issues, events and perspectives involving the black experience.

They meld two seemingly diverse musical styles: classical music and hip hop. Meet one of the members of Black Violin, the string duo coming to the Wharton Center this Friday Night.

This weekend marks another opportunity to see the new music director of the Grand Rapids Symphony, Marcelo Lehninger. In addition, February marks an important moment for many performing arts organizations: announcements for the next season.
