"Call the Midwife" Preview Enchants Guests

Our Evening at WKAR presentation of Call the Midwife attracted more than 75 guests who laughed and yet were touched by the moving first episode of the new PBS series. Call the Midwife premieres Sunday, September 30, on WKAR.

When WKAR station manager Susi Elkins asked "What do you think?" after the screening, there was plenty of audible approval and conversations with guests after only reinforced that fact.

Nearly 200 guests filled Studio A on September 6 as the new season for WKAR Public Media was revealed.

WKAR TV Broadcast Goes 24/7 on September 10

Beginning Monday, September 10, WKAR TV over-the-air viewers will be able to watch WKAR, WKAR World and WKAR Create 24 hours a day.

There will also be a change in channel allocation for WKAR World. It will move to channel 23.2, placing the older standard definition version of WKAR. WKAR will remain on 23.1 in high definition; WKAR World will be at 23.2 and WKAR Create will remain at 23.3.

Participants in WKAR’s upcoming “QuizBusters Special Edition” competition were revealed on Thursday, September 6, at the station’s fall preview.

Playing the first game for the Green Team are Scott Westerman, President, MSU Alumni Association; Jen Sygit, Michigan-based singer and songwriter; Sue Carter, MSU School of Journalism faculty member, author and intrepid adventurer; and team captain Guy Sanville, Artistic Director, Purple Rose Theatre.

WKAR-TV will cover the Republican Convention from 8 to 11:30 on Tuesday and until 11 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday.

Thanks to those of you who have already given to WKAR-TV's August membership campaign. We are moving toward our goal of $95,000 with almost $43,000 pledged as of Friday morning. This is a little less than half of our way to the total we'd like to reach by Sunday, and we're about two-thirds of the way through the campaign.

WKAR Radio Celebrates 90 Years!

Saturday, August 18, marks 90 years of broadcasting on WKAR.

Although the station's first "official" broadcast was a founder's day speech on May 13 of that year, it wasn't until August 18, 1922, that WKAR was granted a federal license.

J.B. "Jimmy" Hasselman was the station's first director, and its first transmitter was built by electrical engineering students in 111 Olds Hall. Until then it was a student radio station.

Dick Estell begins reading Anatomy of Injustice by Raymond Bonner, on August 17. He will conclude The Great Northern Express by Howard Frank Mosher, on August 16. The Radio Reader is heard weekdays at 8:30 a.m., on AM/870.

On August 17, Anatomy of Injustice by Raymond Bonner begins. It is a lucid, page-turning account of the trials and death row appeals of Edward Lee Elmore, a quiet and mentally challenged African-American man accused of the murder of an elderly white woman in South Carolina in 1982.

The WKAR production team heads to Lansing JazzFest this weekend to capture acts live onstage for the next broadcast season of BackStage Pass, the TV series featuring music made in Michigan.

'Peep' Visits Lansing JazzFest!

WKAR heads to Lansing JazzFest on August 3-4 in Lansing's Old Town.  "Peep," the enchanting title character of the children's series Peep and the Big Wide World, will be on hand to greet the kids near the Kidz Beat tent and the MICA stage.

"Peep" will appear on Friday, August 3 between 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. On Saturday, August 4, "Peep" will appear from 2-5 p.m.

Look for our Street Team and have them take your child's photo with Peep! We'll be posting them on our WKAR Facebook page!

U.S. Senate Candidates to Debate on 'Off the Record'

The three Republican candidates running for Michigan’s U.S. Senate seat have agreed to do their one and only televised debate at WKAR-TV on Thursday, August 2, at 2 p.m.

Pete Hoekstra, Clark Durant and Randall Hekman have agreed to a single moderator, no-rules format in a program to be anchored by senior capitol correspondent Tim Skubick.

This special election-year edition of “Off the Record” will be broadcast by Michigan public television stations across the state as part of the “Off the Record” series.

Katie Wolf named Senior Communications Manager

The College of Communication Arts & Sciences at Michigan State University announced today that Katie Wolf will join the College as Senior Communications Manager on August 6, 2012.  Katie Wolf has served as Executive Director of the Michigan Humanities Council, where she has overseen grant awards and programs for many state and federally funded cultural programs.

Peter Whorf: WKAR Radio's New Station Manager

Michigan State University announced today that Peter Whorf will join WKAR as Radio Station Manager for the public broadcasting stations on August 27, 2012.  Whorf comes to WKAR from WFMT in Chicago, where he has served as Program Director and Vice President for Content for the past seven years.
