Almost Five

Oct 22, 2012

Ann Arbor, Mich. ----- It was a back and forth football game with muggy weather on Saturday, as the Michigan State Spartans took on the Michigan Wolverines at The Big House.  The Spartans attempted to win their fifth straight game against the Wolverines.

The Wolverines won the battle in the first half, going into the locker room with a 6-0 lead.  Both teams were eager to see the light in a first-half touchdown, but it never came in full circle.

The first half was highlighted with University of Michigan running back Fitzgerald Toussaint, tacking on a 38-yard run, which led to a Brendan Gibbons field goal.

MSU came firing back in the second half, scoring the first and only touchdown of the game on an Andrew Maxwell 2-yard touchdown pass to tight end Paul Lang.

After a Michigan State hold on defense and subsequent offensive momentum driving down the field, Andrew Maxwell threw an interception late in the third quarter.  The turnover led to a Michigan field goal, taking a 9-7 lead.

As a slight glimpse of sun shined into the stadium during the fourth quarter, the Spartans tacked on a 19-yard Dan Conroy field goal to steal the lead back 10-9.  The game closed by a drive led by Denard Robinson, who completed an eight play 41-yard drive, leading to a game winning field goal by kicker Brendan Gibbons.  He was 3-3 for the day.

Leading the Spartans on the day was quarterback Andrew Maxwell, who completed 21-34 of his passes for 192 passing yards.  Linebacker Denicos Allen totaled 11 tackles for the game, three of which were for losses.

The Spartans now fall to a 1-3 record in the conference, and 4-4 overall.  This marks the first victory versus Michigan State since 2007 for the Wolverines, as well the 900th victory in program history.

Homecoming Show Nothing

Oct 15, 2012

EAST LANSING--The Michigan State Spartans expected another homecoming parade celebrating a win.  But the celebration never came, as MSU dropped their annual Homecoming game 19-16 to Iowa in a double-overtime thriller.

In the first half, MSU wide receiver Aaron Burbidge caught a 38-yard pass, leading to a Dan Conroy 24-yard field goal, putting the Spartans ahead 10-0.

The Iowa Hawkeyes came marching back in the second half, led by kicker Mike Meyer who converted all four of his field goal attempts.  Iowa running back Mark Weisman led the Hawkeyes in rushing with 116 yards on 26 carries, and had a touchdown in the third quarter to pull the Hawkeyes within three points.

The first overtime was concluded with a field goal by each team.  The Hawkeyes sealed the second overtime, after tipping an Andrew Maxwell pass attempt for an interception.

Weisman was dueled by MSU’s Le’Veon Bell, tacking on his fourth 100-yard rushing game of the season with 140 yards on the day.  He also added the sole MSU touchdown for the game.

This loss marks the third home loss this season, as well as consecutive home losses against Iowa, dating back to the 2009 season.

Saved By The Bell

Sep 24, 2012

After a dull first half of 31 yards passing from Michigan State quarterback Andrew Maxwell, the Spartans came back to beat Eastern Michigan in a final score of 23-7.  Michigan State struggled in the first half, scoring six points on two Dan Conroy field goals.  Le'Veon Bell added a touchdown with 2:05 left in the game, in addition to his 253 yards rushing total on 36 touches.  Dion Sims recorded a season-high six passes for 112 receiving yards, tacking on a touchdown as well.  Andrew Maxwell finished the game completing 16-of-29 passes for 159 yards and one touchdown.

The Spartans now have their Big 10 opener against Ohio State next Saturday at Spartan Stadium.
