Michigan State was passed by Villanova for the No. 1 ranking after Duke and Kansas lost three weeks ago. The Spartans were No. 3 at the time, but voters moved the fourth-ranked Wildcats to the top spot.

Michigan State coach Tom Izzo is ready for everything that comes with a No. 1 ranking after his second-ranked Spartans rolled past Savannah State 108-52 on Sunday. With top-ranked Villanova and No. 3 Arizona losing on Saturday, the Spartans are poised to move into the top spot for the first time since the 2015-16 season when this week's Associated Press poll is released Monday.

Nick Ward had 22 points and 14 rebounds , and No. 2 Michigan State rolled to a 111-61 victory over Cleveland State on Friday night, the third straight game for the Spartans with over 100 points.

Michigan State put a nice, big exclamation mark on its turnaround season. Brian Lewerke threw for 213 yards and three touchdowns, and LJ Scott ran for 110 yards and two scores for No. 18 Michigan State, which took advantage of Luke Falk's absence to rout No. 21 Washington State 42-17 in the Holiday Bowl on Thursday night.

A partial implosion of the Silverdome failed to bring down the upper section of the Detroit Lions' former home as intended Sunday as demolition of the stadium began. Demolition company Adamo said the blasts in Pontiac, Michigan, did weaken the Silverdome and it could still fall, but it's unclear when that might happen.

Tom Izzo is usually hard to please, consistently finding fault with his teams following victories. After No. 3 Michigan State beat No. 5 Notre Dame 81-63 on Thursday night, he looked and sounded uncharacteristically happy after a game.

Brian Lewerke threw for a touchdown and ran for another and No. 21 Michigan State held the ball for more than 47 minutes in defeating Rutgers 40-7 on Saturday to cap a terrific turnaround season.

Matt McQuaid first tweaked his ankle. Then he started to get a cramp in his left quadriceps, followed by a cramp in his right quadriceps. In between stints on the bench to rest and get fluids, McQuaid helped No. 4 Michigan State make up for the absence of star Miles Bridges.

Miles Bridges scored 20 points before limping off the court after injuring his left ankle , casting a pall over No. 2 Michigan State as it beat Stony Brook 93-71 on Sunday night.
