Longtime Holt basketball coach Essell puts family first, retires from coaching

HOLT, Mich. - Matt Essell’s entire life has been centered around basketball. In college, he was an all-league player at Albion. His passion for the game landed him a job in Holt, where he would spend more than two decades involved in various roles with the basketball program. Yet, fresh off a district title and with a good varsity team returning next year, he still wasn’t sure about his coaching future.

Holt wrestling star Leyrer transforms tough loss into state title

HOLT, Mich. – In the 2016 individual state championship tournament, Holt wrestler Kolin Leyrer lost in the semifinals. He was the state’s top wrestler for much of the year, but losing meant Leyrer watch the wrestler he just beat the week before go on to win the state championship at The Palace of Auburn Hills.

Holt football finds success with two-way players

HOLT, Mich.— Khari Gray jogged to the football sideline and sat out a couple of plays, something that is a rare sight. Minus standing backflips at the end of games, he is similar to Heisman Trophy candidate Jabrill Peppers of Michigan because he is always on the field.  

The Grand Ledge girls basketball team relinquishes an opportunity to win the CAAC Blue title outright, falling to Holt, 62 to 48.  Grand Ledge, Holt, and East Lansing all share the conference championship and now await district play.  Catch full hilights from the Rams win right here.

The Holt Rams entered week three of the high school football season looking for their first win of the season. They found it against a struggling Lansing Eastern team last week. The Rams rolled over the Quakers, 57 to 22. Here are the plays highlighted...

1. Eric Potter with the QB keeper to give Holt a 21 to 6 lead in the 1st QTR.
2. Ty Glover with the first down run toward the sidelines in the 2nd QTR.
3. Ty Glover with a run up the middle for a touchdown,... 28 to 6 Holt in the 2nd QTR.
4. Tim Cain with a big run to extend Holt's lead... 35 to 6 in the 2nd QTR.
