Neighbors in Action: Resolution Services

A dispute between neighbors or a fight between high school students are pretty common. But sometimes those disputes become contentious and can land people in court or end with students suspended or expelled. For this week’s Neighbors in Action segment, we talk with Resolution Services, a non-profit that helps people resolve those conflicts before they get to that point.

On this week’s Neighbors in Action segment, Current State catches up with Tashmica Torok, founder of The Firecracker Foundation. The non-profit helps children who have been the victims of sexual abuse find treatment and support and is celebrating its second anniversary this week.


Our Neighbors in Action segment this week looks at Camp Liberty in Jackson County. It’s a volunteer operation that gives veterans a chance to spend time outdoors enjoying activities like fishing, hunting, hiking and canoeing.

Neighbors in Action: Paws With a Cause

Paws With a Cause trains service dogs to assist people with disabilities. Current State speaks with Janey Ladd, who received her dog Colonel from Paws, and Deb Davis, community engagement manager with Paws With a Cause.

Lansing has long been known as a place where refugees from various parts of the world have come to build a new life. One agency at the forefront of serving refugees is St. Vincent Catholic Charities.

It’s Wednesday, which means it’s time for Neighbors in Action, when we feature people and organizations working to make mid-Michigan a better place. It’s estimated that there are more than two-million caregivers in Michigan. Some are health care professionals, but many others provide care for their family members at home. Even with the proper training, caregiving is stressful work, both physically and emotionally.

Today, we learn about Hosanna House--an organization that works to get youth aging out of the foster care system find affordable and supportive housing. 

 Current State talks to executive director Karen Bacon and Nichole Martin, who coordinates the Michigan Youth Opportunity Initiative (MYOI) for the Department of Health and Human Services in Ingham County.

Today, we hear about an organization you’re probably familiar with: the YMCA. What you might not know is the organization offers a lot more than swimming lessons, including programs for adult refugees and physical education programs in Lansing public schools.

Today we look at ePIFany Now, an event coming up on Sunday. Participants will be given ideas on ways to pass kindness forward to others. Later that day, people will get back together to tell the stories of the things they did and the reactions of those they helped along the way.
