Michigan State University students Katie Raynard and Anami Chan will receive an award honoring their work to demonstrate diversity through artistic expression.  The two MSU seniors are studying apparel and textile design.

Raynard is an associate designer at The Runway, the new fashion industry incubator in downtown Lansing that’s only been up and running for about four months now.

Current State’s Kevin Lavery recently toured the building, which is in a historic venue.

The business start-up scene here in Lansing is about to get another boost. A business incubator for fashion designers called The Runway is expected to open in February in the historic former Knapp’s department store building downtown. The project will house up to 12 designers in residence and a retail store, and will work to retain and cultivate design talent here in mid-Michigan.

Economic developers have their sights on what they’re calling a “burgeoning” part of Michigan’s economy—the garment industry.  East Lansing’s Prima Civitas Foundation wants to connect scattered designers and manufacturers and morph them into a greater economic force.
