Midwest mushers head to UP


From "Iron Will" to "Balto", American pop culture is full of books and movies about the Iditarod. The 1000 mile race through Alaska is probably the most famous sled dog race in the world. But it’s not the only one. This weekend, mushers from across the Midwest and Canada will gather in Marquette for the UP 200, Midnight Run, and Jack Pine 30 races.

New dog virus spreads to Michigan, MSU seeks answers

MSU veterinarians say two dogs with circovirus have died. However, they also were infected with other organisms that were more likely to have caused their deaths.

Dog owners in Michigan have a new reason to keep an eye on their pets. Last week, Michigan State University clinicians announced the arrival in Michigan of a virus that can make dogs sick.  The canine circovirus was first identified in California just last April.

Dog fighting, hoarding and strays: Animal control issues in Ingham County

American pit bulls and their mixed offspring make up nearly 60 percent of the shelter's stray dogs, says Jamie McAloon-Lampman, director of Ingham County Animal Control.

New research helps owners, vets assess dogs' health

Maria Iliopoulou's research uses questionnaires about dogs' behavior to helps vets and owners make decisions.

When a beloved dog becomes seriously ill, owners are faced with difficult decisions. Researchers are developing a new tool which could help dog owners tackle the tough choice of prolonging life or letting go.
