Meet Jody and Peter for Classics and Coffee

90.5 Classical music host Jody Knol and new WKAR Radio station manager Peter Whorf will be talking the classics over coffee at Schuler Books & Music, at the store's Okemos location.

In addition to discussing the mid-Michigan classical music scene, Jody and Peter want to hear listener hopes for classical music on 90.5 and WKAR.org and get feedback on some of the station's classical music initiatives over the coming months.

Curt, Gene and Nancy -- Signing Off!

When viewers heard Curt Gilleo and Gene Purdum during the April 2012 Spring into Action fundraising campaign, they were hearing the end of an era. After April 27, Curt and Gene take their well-deserved retirements from WKAR Radio.

Joining them on the retiree list will be Nancy Gilleo, WKAR’s business manager, who somehow manages to keep on top of the volumes of paperwork and grant materials required to keep a public broadcasting station on the air.

Sundays at 9 p.m. on WKAR-TV beginning May 6. For fans of the 21st century Sherlock Holmes, the wait is over. The hit "Masterpiece Mystery!" series returns in May with three new episodes of "Sherlock."

"Picturing America" Conference for Teachers

The Lansing School District and the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) are pleased to invite area teachers to apply for participation in a NEH Picturing America Conference entitled “Mid-Michigan’s Legacy as the Arsenal of Democracy” in May, 2012.    

Facilitated by the Lansing School District, this second conference (the first identical conference in March was fully enrolled) will be hosted by WKAR at the College of Communication Arts & Sciences at Michigan State University, May 10 through May 12, 2012.

TechNote: WKAR Online Streams are Restored

As of late Thursday afternoon (4/5), all WKAR Online streams are now available for listening.

The streams are running on an emergency server for the time being.

We can expect that there will be work in the days ahead that could result in additional outages. Watch this area for updates.

WKAR Sponsors “Raising Readers” Workshop

WKAR’s Ready To Learn Service will host a free “Raising Readers” Family Fun Workshops on Thursday, April 19, from 5:30-7 p.m. The event will take place at Cumberland Elementary School, 2801 Cumberland Road, Lansing.

The workshop is targeted to families and children ages 4-6, although siblings are welcome to attend. Participants will learn activities that are fun but also offer a new way to build reading skills.

WKAR’s Ready To Learn Service will host a free “Raising Readers” Family Fun Workshops on Thursday, March 29, 6-7:30 p.m. The event will take place at North Elementary School, 333 E. Miller Rd., Lansing.

The workshop is targeted to families and children ages 4-6, although siblings are welcome to attend. Participants will learn activities that are fun but also offer a new way to build reading skills.

Tonight (Thursday, March 8) the "Michigan Out of Doors" team will be at Pledge Madness Central, offering a special boat trip from either Port Huron or Pictured Rocks for donations at certain levels.

Later in the evening, enjoy an encore of the quirky and popular "Alone in the Wilderness" (9 p.m.)

Wednesday, March 7, at 8:30p.m.WKAR-TV will feature the "Great Performances" production of "Les Miserables in Concert."

Alfie Boe stars as Victor Hugo's enduring hero, Jean Valjean, in this 25th anniversary concert production which includes a dazzling finale featuring past cast members including Michael Crawford, Colm Wilkinson and John Owen Jones.

Also included in the cast are Lea Salonga and Nick Jonas.
