MSU Kendo Club finds success and gains members

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- More than 50,000 Michigan State students call East Lansing home, and for each one of them, there is probably something on campus get involved in.

    There are over 30 club sports for MSU students, and one of the oldest, but least attention-seeking, is the Martial Arts discipline of Kendo.

   MSU's Kendo team is competitive, having started this semester by winning the championship at the Case Western Reserve Kendo tournament in Ohio.

The Spartans moved to 3-0 on the year, topping the Air Force Falcons 35-21 at Spartan Stadium on Saturday. It was the first time that MSU welcomed a service academy to East Lansing.

Babi Mac, AKA Cait McMahan, is a former Tennessee Lady Vols women's basketball player who won two national championships under Pat Summit. She is now a hip hop recording artist and the official DJ of ESPN's "College GameDay." Current Sports host Al Martin chats with her about how she went from hoops to hip hop.

Despite the Western Michigan Broncos pulling to within 10 points in the fourth quarter, Michigan State was able to hang on and top the Broncos, 37-24 at Waldo Stadium.

On today's "Current Sports" Al Martin talks about last night's NBA Finals Game 4, in which the Golden State Warriors topped the Cleveland Cavaliers to tie the series at two games. Al addresses why LeBron James haters still exists today. We also bring to you a "Flashback Friday" chat with David Thomas and Amaka Agugua of the MSU women's basketball team. The show closes out with "Reflection Friday" and a tribute to wrestling icon Dusty Rhodes.

The White team defeated the Green, 9-3, Saturday afternoon at Spartan Stadium for the annual Spring Game. A total of 48,000 fans showed up for the afternoon exhibition matchup, just shy of Mark Dantonio's goal of 50K.

As Michigan State’s swimming and diving teams look forward to the 2015-16 season, they see this past one as a foundation.

In 2015, the women’s team scored 65 points at the Big Ten championship, placing them in 13th. The men’s team, had slightly better results, with 82 points and a 10th place finish.

And although Michigan State produced no NCAA qualifiers in the 2015 season, Matt Gianiodis, MSU’s head swimming coach, feels 2016 holds promise.

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Lizzie Brown, from Ashburton, New Zealand, wasn’t ready to give up swimming upon graduating high school. But taking time off from academics wasn’t ideal for her either.

Lachie McLeish, from Sydney, Australia, wanted the best of both worlds, working towards a college degree while remaining a competitive swimmer.

In the end, both swimmers found a way to do just that, but it wasn’t in their home countries. International college athletes are drawn to travel to the U.S. for college, for the education and athletic opportunities alike.

EAST LANSING - Following its 27-game non-conference slate, there’s a different feeling around the Michigan State softball program heading into the Big Ten season compared from a year ago.

Junior second baseman Jacquie Reiser, who hit her first career home run in a 12-0 rout of Alabama A&M last weekend, said the team learned they can play with any team in the non-conference schedule.

Travis Trice equaled a career high with 27 points and Matt Costello lifted Michigan State at both ends of the court, helping the Spartans to a 72-66 victory over Purdue on Wednesday night. Michigan State played the entire second half without Branden Dawson, who appeared to take a shot to the head and was limited to nine minutes on senior night.

Snow may be on the ground, but that doesn't stop the MSU football team from getting in the gym to prepare for another college football season. Mark Dantonio and his team held winter conditioning today at the indoor practice facility. Check out footage from the session here. 

MSU men's basketball player Keenan Wetzel has been working on his film, "The Cager," for quite some time and finally was ready to reveal it to the public. 

The young director premiered the 25-minute short film in a private gala at NCG theatre in Lansing, MI. The movie stars his former MSU teammate, Delvon Roe. Wetzel wrote the script and began directing the film last summer.

WKAR's Al Martin made the trip to NCG to talk with Keenan, and others, about the remarkable accomplishment.

        EAST LANSING -- David Zoltowski, a Michigan State senior and varsity swimmer, was always sure of two things: he wanted to attend a Big Ten school and study the brain. While positive of what he wanted to do, Zoltowski’s path to MSU was a twisting one, influenced by his desire to swim collegiately.
