Radio Receiver

The WKAR Radio Reading Service service is available to individuals who meet some or all of these qualifications:

  • The individual cannot read or effectively use conventional printed material as a result of visual, physical or cognitive limitations.
  • The individual has any of the following physical conditions: macular degeneration, glaucoma, retinitis pigmentosa, dyslexia.

The special radio receiver needed to listen to Radio Reading Service programs is loaned free-of-charge to individuals who qualify for the service.

A Special Radio

Listening to WKAR Radio Reading Service requires a special radio receiver with one channel preset to receive the WKAR RRS signal (a sub-channel carrier band of 90.5 FM WKAR). Some models of radio can also be used to listen to standard FM broadcasts, such as 90.5 FM WKAR.

It's Free

The RRS radio is loaned by WKAR to the listener at no charge. WKAR retains ownership of the RRS Radio. The RRS radio is to be returned to WKAR when the service is no longer desired, so that others may enjoy the benefits of WKAR Radio Reading Service.
