Melanie Safka performs with her son, Beau, Friday at the Green Wood Coffee House in Ann Arbor.

One of the biggest stars to emerge from the Woodstock Music Festival was Melanie. The singer-songwriter appears at the Green Wood Coffee House in Ann Arbor Friday. Current State’s Scott Pohl talks with Melanie about Woodstock, her recording career and working these days with her son, Beau.

“Brand New Key” was a big hit for one of music’s first artists to go by a single name: Melanie. She burst onto the music scene with a performance at Woodstock. The 1969 festival featured superstars like Jimi Hendrix and The Who, but it also featured new artists at the time who went on to stardom, like Melanie. She has a Friday night concert in Ann Arbor at the Green Wood Coffee House.

Melanie Safka is getting on with life after her husband Peter’s death a few years ago, working extensively with her son, Beau. He’ll perform with her Friday night.

Current State’s Scott Pohl talks with Melanie about her lengthy career in the music business.

Scott Pohl is a general assignment news reporter and produces news features and interviews. He is also an alternate local host on NPR's "Morning Edition."
