Wolf Hunting, Civil Rights, And $1B Budget Hole On State Lawmakers’ Agenda

State lawmakers have a wide range of issues to address between now and the November election.

The state House returns from its summer break for one day this week.

We have more from The Michigan Public Radio Network’s Jake Neher.

Lawmakers will likely be talking about ways to fix a possible billion dollar hole in the state budget. That’s after the Michigan Supreme Court ruled last month that certain companies can calculate their tax liabilities in a way that costs them less.

Republican state Representative Kurt Heise says it’s a big concern.

“I want to get some more information on that to make sure it’s something that is manageable or if there’s an appeal route or a settlement route that we might be able to pursue,” he says.

Governor Rick Snyder has asked the state Supreme Court to reconsider its ruling. If not, a number of lawmakers say they could change the tax law retroactively to fix the budget issue.
