Wolf hunting opponents have filed a lawsuit challenging the state law that circumvented voter referendums on the question.

The lawsuit was filed in the state Court of Claims by the Keep Michigan Wolves Protected Campaign. The lawsuit says a law adopted by the Legislature as a result of a petition drive is invalid because it encompasses too many subjects. Along with hunting, the initiative also included appropriating money to combat invasive species and free hunting and fishing licenses for veterans.
Federal wildlife officials stopped future wolf hunts by returning the gray wolf to the endangered species list. Keep Michigan Wolves Protected says the lawsuit is necessary in case Congress succeeds in forcing wolves off the endangered list.
